Overview:
The Helium Storage Tank BL01-001 is fitted to the mass
spectrometer instrument pack for the Ptolemy experiment on
the Rosetta mission.
The tanks are ‘sealed for life’ storing Helium
gas for a period of up to 12 years until Rosetta reaches its
destination. Ptolemy will use the helium in two gas experiments
once the lander touches down.
The unit is a lightweight welded Titanium pressure vessel
which releases gas on a command to a mechanical rupture valve.
The pressure vessel comprises a titanium pressure vessel,
a frangible pillar an expanding plug to seal the vessel after
charging, plus a welded in blanking plug to provide a secondary
seal. The internal volume of the vessel has been maximised
and the mass minimised.
